There’s a chill in the air in Texas this week. And it’s not just caused by the weather. Abortion clinics in five cities were closed Friday as a sweeping new Republican law to take away women’s reproductive freedom went into effect.
“The clocks are going back this week,” said Governor Rick Perry. “Remember: that’s one hour for men. 40 years for women.”
The new law means that, for example, a woman impregnated by rape in El Paso will now have to travel 600 miles for an abortion, which the conservative U.S. Circuit Judge Priscilla Owen who ruled in the case said, “does not constitute an undue burden.” Unless, of course, you’ve been raped in El Paso.
