He tried to block the investigation. He joked about it. And when it finally emerged that “Bridgegate” was a carefully planned act of political spite carried out by his closest adviser and the high-school friend for whom he’d invented a high-paid Port Authority job, Chris Christie did what many caught-in-the-act bullies do: He ran away to hide.
Christie finally made a pathetic statement that amounted to: “My closest adviser and dearest childhood friend misled me. But as President I’ll surround myself with top-notch people.”
But even fake Donald Trump knew that this guy could no longer be seen as the man to govern the United States of America:
Can you imagine Chris Christie as President? Expect major traffic jams in blue states #bridgegate
— Donald J. Drumpf (@RealDonalDrumpf) January 9, 2014
Fact is, Christie and his advisers knew that shutting down traffic to the nation’s busiest bridge would not only inconvenience people. It would delay first responders. And put lives at risk.
They were warned about it. They did it anyway. And when elected officials do that, the terrorists win.
UPDATE: Think Progress is now reporting that “Bridgegate” contributed to delays in at least 4 emergency situations, including one in which a 91-year-old woman died: http://thinkprogress.org/justice/2014/01/08/3138621/report-bridge-closures-led-emergency-response-delays-death/
